Dancing the Native Way
To further skip out on class, again for a legitimate reason, almost our entire Hub went to Nueva Vizcaya’s Founding Day festivities yesterday! There was a huge market and a parade of the various Barangays in their native costumes. They all ended up in a big open area behind the capitol building and butchered 15 pigs and 5 carabou! Unfortunately (or fortunately, I’m not really sure…) we missed the actual butchering and only saw them finishing up. I’m sure it will be something I’ll get to experience later on. Following that was some native dancing and more wandering around the market.
The highlight of the whole event though was definitely seeing Kiwi in his native attire! Kiwi is a 35 year old, current serving volunteer from New Zealand who has American citizenship and has worked their in the paper and steel Industry for quite sometime. Here he has been working in the WATSAN sector in Ambagio, Nueva Vizcaya for a year. He’s been at most of our Hub Sites to give his perspective and hangout with all of us. I’m not sure if Jackson posted any of the pictures of us in the native attire from swearing in, but it is quite the sight. The women are simply wearing a skirt woven in the pattern of the particular Barangay and a white top, but the men get to wear what is called a G-String. Its simply one strip of clothe wrapped between the legs and around the waist. Some wore a top, usual a vest of some kind. Should be an interesting experience most definitely, and is also the native attire in Ifugao, sunburning very pale, exposed areas of the body will be a concern though.
The excitement among all of us is finally beginning to build! The 2nd to last Hub Site is Monday- Wednesday and our goodbye event for our host families, called a Handog, is on the 28th. Following that we swear in the evening of the 6th, have a conference with our supervisors the 6th & 7th, and then its off to site! On top of all of that, my guitar is being transported up here as I write & will arrive with the resource volunteers coming to our next Hub on Monday! People are great.
